Background of the Study
Traditional storytelling in Yoruba communities serves as a vital medium for transmitting cultural heritage and historical linguistic forms. These narratives, passed down orally over generations, encapsulate syntactic patterns that have remained relatively unchanged despite modern influences (Afolabi, 2023). By employing unique sentence structures, repetition, and parallelism, traditional stories preserve archaic syntactic features that offer insight into the language’s historical evolution (Ogunleye, 2024). Storytelling not only reinforces community identity but also functions as an informal pedagogical tool, ensuring that historical syntax is retained among younger speakers. Recent studies emphasize that traditional oral narratives contribute significantly to language maintenance and revitalization efforts (Adebola, 2025). This study examines the role of traditional storytelling in preserving historical syntactic patterns in Yoruba, comparing narratives across generations to assess continuity and change.
Statement of the Problem
Although traditional storytelling is recognized for its cultural significance, its role in preserving historical syntactic patterns in Yoruba is underdocumented. Research often focuses on content and themes rather than syntactic structures, leaving a gap in understanding how storytelling sustains archaic language forms (Afolabi, 2023). This gap limits effective language preservation strategies and cultural education.
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it demonstrates how traditional storytelling preserves important syntactic features, supporting language revitalization and cultural education. The findings will benefit linguists, educators, and cultural heritage advocates by providing evidence-based strategies for maintaining historical language forms.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is confined to traditional Yoruba storytelling and its syntactic aspects; it does not cover other elements of oral literature.
